Development
Developing pieces quickly, controlling the center and castling safely.
Summer camp for children aged 7-12
At Mokum Meesters, children discover just how much fun chess can be. In the morning, they learn smart moves and strategies; in the afternoon, there is time for cooking, crafts, outdoor play, and fun games.
Chess and strategy camp
Mokum Meesters was founded by Tim and Tessa, two parents who are looking for fun summer camps for their children each time the season arrives. While Amsterdam has a wide variety of options, they could not find a camp centered around the increasingly popular sport of chess, which sparked the creation of Mokum Meesters.
Together with AanZet, they present the first chess camp for children in Amsterdam and surroundings. AanZet consists of a group of passionate teachers who have been offering chess and programming lessons for years at more than 100 schools in Amsterdam and other cities.
Programme
Each day focuses on a new chess theme. We practice with examples, puzzles and short games, so that both beginners and children with some experience can join in. It is not just about winning, but above all about teamwork, self-confidence and fun.
Developing pieces quickly, controlling the center and castling safely.
Practicing double attacks, pins and discovered attacks with examples.
Protecting pieces, escaping check and reducing danger.
Checkmate in 1, 2 or 3 moves, puzzle competitions and making puzzles.
A festive closing event with games, prizes and certificates.
The location
The community center is located in the green Bilderdijkpark: a well-organized, neighborhood-oriented space with open areas, sports fields and a lively playground. Children can run, climb, explore and have fun together in an area that is easily closed off.
The community center is also used by the chess club Amsterdam-West, so the chess vibes are already there.
The team
Tessa is a mother of five and has run a children's concept store on Bilderdijkstraat for over a decade. As a result, she knows exactly what children enjoy.
Tim is the father of two daughters and organizes several chess events each week through Bar Blitz. Thanks to his network, Mokum Meesters works with enthusiastic chess coaches.
Gerben is the proud father of a 2-year-old son and founder of AanZet, a company through which he strives to pass on his passion for chess and programming to a new generation. The company has since grown into a provider of teachers to over a hundred schools in Amsterdam, Haarlem and other cities.
